EDUC-6145: Week 6 Post

Analyzing Scope Creep               As a teacher, I am also the head coach for our extracurricular dance team. Being the Director of a program involves many projects with potential for scope creep. A big hurdle we take on every year is competing. Competition happens in February of every year, but preparations begin in June. For competition, we need specialty music mixed, choreography taught, technique sessions to get our dancers to improve as much as possible, and other administrative work like fundraising, purchasing requests, and field trip paperwork as well. Because this task begins eight months before, it is crucial that I maintain the scope of the project so that by the time we arrive to competition, every moving piece is not only completed but completed with a level of mastery that will put my dancers at an advantage over our competitors.             ...

Project Management Tools  Forecast               This is a web-based platform that merges projects, resources, and financials all in one place.  I love that the site has an auto-scheduling feature and that it integrates with other apps like Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, Outlook, and so many more! Forecast also has automated cost and budget estimations and can analyze the differences between profitable and submarginal projects to relay how different project roles might affect outcomes.              The cost of forecast is $25/user/month with a minimum of 10 users.  MeisterTask               This web-based project management tool helps organize and maintain tasks in a Kanban-style project board. I love that this platform has a free version for entry-level users. I...

Communication Modalities: Text, Audio, and Face-to-Face     1.       How did your interpretation of the message change from one modality to the next?              The sense of urgency becomes more apparent as we move from one modality to the next. An email represents the mode of communication with the least amount of urgency, while face to face communication represents the most urgent form of communication. It is also important to note that availability is a factor in communication modality, for example- in some situations a face-to-face conversation may not be possible.    2.       What factors influenced how you perceived the message?              An email feels like the least urgent form of communication because it is the least personal. Written communication may be the most difficult way to conve...

Project: Winter Recital Retrieved from https://kissflow.com/project/five-phases-of-project-management/   Background information   Every December I am tasked with the job of putting together a winter recital for all my fine arts dance classes to showcase what they have learned so far in the school year. This recital showcases 175+ students from all levels of dance in my program. In addition to my own classes, I invite dance students from our feeder middle schools as well as other elective classes such as band, orchestra, and theater to perform. The recital ticket sales act as a major fundraiser for my classes to pay for items like dance shoes, and costumes therefore the success of the show is vital to the continuation of my program. When you break down a project into smaller manageable stages, it’s easier to control the project quality (2022).  I have hosted the show for nearly 10 years now, so I have hit a level of automation that allows me not to get bogged down w...

Mind Map: Distance Learning

Week 1: Defining Distance Learning

The definition of distance learning has evolved greatly and will continue to evolve over time. Two major factors that drive change in the distance learning sector is innovation and experience. Distance education is described as the process of teaching and learning where the student and teacher are geographically distant in some capacity (Smaldino, et Al. 2019). As technological advances have been propelling society forward, so too has distance learning. It seems like we have reached a peak point in time where not only do we have the technology to prepare a rigorous and compelling learning environment, but now also the societal acceptance that this way of learning is equivalent to its traditional counterpart.    As this course has begun, I felt relatively comfortable with my working knowledge of distance learning. I have taken undergraduate classes online, I am now in graduate school online, and I have taught high school classes online through a pandemic. I am familiar with how...
